Service Cost

The cost of homecare services are significantly lower in comparison with assisted living or nursing home care.  The average home care services run about 1/3 the cost of an Assisted Living Facility and less than ¼ of what the skilled facility would cost.

Few individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia and their families can afford to pay for skilled nursing facilities or assisted living facility services for as long as the services are needed. Homecare services are the most affordable long-term care solution.

In 2016 the average cost of these Alzheimer’s/Dementia care services were:

Assisted living facility:

In 2016, the average cost for basic services in an assisted living facility was $119 a day, $3,628 a month, or $43,539 a year.

About half (51%) of the assisted living communities surveyed provide Alzheimer’s and dementia care for residents, 61% of which charge an additional fee for this service. Alzheimer's and dementia care in assisted living communities costs approximately $1,150 more each month, or $13,800 more per year.

Nursing home/Skilled Nursing Facility:

In 2016, the average cost for a private room in a nursing home was $253 a day, or $92,378 a year. The average cost of a semi-private room in a nursing home was $225 a day, or $82,125 a year.

Medicaid is the only federal program that will cover the long nursing home stays that most people with dementia require in the late stages of their illness, but Medicaid requires beneficiaries to be low income to receive coverage. Private long-term care insurance is only an option for those healthy and wealthy enough to purchase policies before developing dementia.
